This morning I receive a text message: Today is 9-11. Thousands of people lost loved ones. I hope to God I never lose you. Send to people you can’t live without.
I am filled with gratitude. Gratitude for those I’ve lost and for those who remain…and for those who are being born. Gratitude for all who have a deep relationship with spirit that affirms life…gratitude for family, extended family and spirit family…gratitude for those care-givers who patiently and kindly attend to the sick, the wounded, the confused, the elders…gratitude for the abundance of the harvest…gratitude for the power of the practice…gratitude for the mystery and the beauty of nature…gratitude for the light and the shadow…gratitude for the peace within…
JUST NOW
In the morning as the storm begins to blow away
the clear sky appears for a moment and it seems to me
that there has been something simpler than I could ever
believe
simpler than I could have begun to find words for
not patient not even waiting no more hidden
than the air itself that became part of me for a while
with every breath and remained with me unnoticed
something that was here unnamed unknown in the days
and the nights not separate from them
not separate from them as they came and were gone
it must have been here neither early nor late then
by what name can I address it now holding out my thanks
Merwin is one of my favorite poets. Thank you for posting this poem by him. =)
